Midterm study questions

English 339—Fall 2011

The Midterm will be a single essay question of about 500 words, which you have one hour to write. You may bring your texts to class. Please use a bluebook and indicate on the cover whether you would like this essay to be counted for the GWR.

On the exam you will be given four of the following topics out of which you will select one:

Compare and contrast in Henry V and Twelfth Night:

1. depictions of relations between the sexes
2. the roles of the church
3. the uses of dissimulation or deception: hiding, masquerading, spying
4. the power of language: persuasion, manipulation and control
5. portrayals of the customs of chivalry and honor
6. differences between public and private speech and behavior
7. representations of boyhood and manhood
